Title

Cultural Trigonometry of Franco-American Stereotypes

Description

Using the example of Bath, Maine's Thomas Plant, a successful nineteenth-century French Canadian immigrant entrepreneur, Rodrigue argues for a new interpretation of the Franco-American ethnic experience. The life and work of Plant in New England before the great French Canadian migration of 1870-1920. Research on waterway and roadway connections between the early 19th-century regions of Lower Canada and western Maine, with corresponding references to French Canadian and Yankee migrations. Attempt to initiate "a general re-evaluation of the French experience in North America" (42).
