From the introduction: "In this study I will 1) analyze the fundamental nature of the experiment in survival that the Franco-Americans themselves call 'la survivance' , 2) investigate the historical, cultural, and social origins of 'la survivance' in French-Canadian culture, 3) determine the extent to which the Franco-Americans in New England constitute a deviation from the norm in respect to assimilation into American culture, 4) determine the factors that caused deviation from the norm."
