Title

On Maintaining a Francophone Identity in Cohoes, NY

Description

From the author: "One third of the population of Cohoes, New York, is descended from French-Canadians who immigrated to the northeastern United States between 1840 and 1930. Since the end of immigration, the close-knit community centered on the French parish has undergone profound changes and French has ceased to be the language of everyday communication among its members. This paper describes the characteristic behaviors and attitudes which set the remaining Cohoes French speakers off as a group from other minority language communities and help them maintain their francophone identity."
