From the author: "The following stories represent the folk history of the logging business in northern Maine. They were gathered over the years and the facts may have been changed as the stories were passed on to succeeding generations. However, they do capture the essence of life in the lumber camps and how it changed over the years. They are memories that should be shared."
De l'introduction: "Les contes qui suivent representent l'histoire folklorique de l'industrie de bois dans le nord du Maine. Ils ont été cueillis a travers plusieurs années, et les faits ont pu changer. Sans doute, chaque génération y a ajouté son interprétation. L'important, c'est que les contes ici présentés renferment l'essentiel de l'atmosphère de la vie des camps de bûcherons. En même temps, ils décrivent l'évolution de ce mode de vie. Ce sont des souvenirs qui valent la peine d'être partager."
