Title

Children of the Uprooted

Description

Sequel to Handlin's monumental text, "The Uprooted." Voices of first-generation Americans: the children of immigrants to America. In addition to pieces from Theodore Dreiser, Carl Sandburg, Louis Brandeis, and Reinhold Niebuhr, "Children" features the writing of prominent tabloid journalist Emile Gavreau - the child of French-Canadian immigrants to the US Northeast. From the introduction: "The most significant variations among the children of the uprooted were those created by changes in the society in which they lived. Their writings have therefore been arranged chronologically by the date of their birth, on the assumption that the significant attitudes were shaped in childhood and youth."
