Dissertation presenting anthropological research on French Canadian loggers at work in northern New Hampshire in the middle twentieth century. The impact of work situations on the families of loggers, and the influence of family life on structures and patterns of work in the woods. Observations on the differences between New Hampshire loggers who have immediate families living in Québec with those who have families in the United States. Takes into account work mobility, kinship and household norms, father-absence, and conceptions of logging and family life as interrelated factors distinguishable between workers of different living situations. Presented in historical contexts of French Canadian labor and migration, as well as with a background in the cultural norms of the French Canadian family.
